I thought I owned a Savoy for the last Twenty years…
Matthew pointed out to me that my VIN number for my Savoy is incorrect (it shows a Belvie #). In fact, not one number on my car’s VIN Tag matches my CarTitle.
So I gather all my info, including Registration from previous owner in New York (used as aTitle) which also has incorrect VIN (since 1984 now). I have the Savoy’s production sheet, a pencil rubbing of the VIN Tag, a Bill of Sale, and the current Registration and Title.
I head to Motor Vehicles last Thursday Sept 1, 2011. They say “what do you have as proof of ownership that shows correct number?” - I GOT NOTHING! They check the books and say that my title VIN (the Belvie) could have been built. They ask other STUPIDVISORS and all agree nothing can be done to title my car in Maryland. They suggest a Court Order may be necessary. They Promise a call back to me on Tuesday 09/06 since Friday and Monday were holidays.
You guessed it - no calls back to date.
Any suggestions?
Do I write the museum to try and get a punch card for the Belvie and Savoy VINs? Mayby the Belvie was never built?
Do I try and track down the owner of the Belvie by guessing it may have been owned by the same person as the Savoy owner?
My seller is deceased so I don’t know who his seller was as a starting point from way back in 1984.

It sure would be nice if the Belvie owners on this site would find a match to the M2301124871 VIN.
If your asking why I care - its because I can’t drive a car I don’t own. It would not have been covered if we are/were in an accident etc.
Second digit after the M indicates model. Both are a 3 and that stands for Savoy.
The incorrect VIN is not available from Chrysler, I’m sure about that.
Incorrect one:
M: 1959
2: V8
3: Savoy
0: build plant, can only be a 3, 4, 5, 6 or a 9
1: starting for the seq number
124871: number of the car build at that plant
Correct:
M: 1959
1: 6 cylinder
3: Savoy
5: new ark
1: starting of the seq number
17529: number of the car built at that plant
That means the M2301 is not a valid number that could have been built - the plant code does not exist! Now all I need is to prove that to motor vehicles.
Matthew & Curt , did we ever re-confirm that Curt’s Title does infact show a “0” (zero) as the build plant? It would be weird that the DMV would say that the sequence could be valid when there was never a “0” plant? And would never had shown up in the DMV data base as a possiblilty of occuring. Changing the title would just be too hard to do as Curt has found out.
Trying to come up with something for Curt but want to make sure the offical title does show a “0” in it. Which would be wrong still and would be in conflict with the body tag which is not there based on the title info. Probably was a 6 or 3 that was transcribed wrong. 9 would be a wild shot…
I have to deal with these types of problems often, as the state requires me to have ownership papers on every single car I have [over 1000]. California laws will differ to Maryland’s though, but If I get a car in with the VIN missing, the state police need to inspect it and will give the car a new VIN which is binding. Others with missing or lost titles I run a storage or towing lien on, most are no longer in the state’s computer, and are easily titled.
You may want to check into having a lien sale done if you have a friend that owns a repair shop or body shop, in order to get a clear title.
I spent 3 days in the local hospital with shingles on my forehead/scalp. Wow what pain - still have an area of scabbing left.
I will make 1 more attempt at our Motor Vehicle Admin, mostly because they never called back as promised. I really want the chance to get the same STUPIDVISOR I had so I can complain. I will prove to them that M230 can’t be a valid VIN (no plants with zero).
I already checked w/ my insurance and I am good to go. Their underwriters said don’t change VIN on insurance policiy just make a note of true VIN# M135 (Newark) on the policy until VIN issue is settled.
If that does not work, then I will get creative as the two John’s suggest!
If you have a friend in the auto body, repair, or towing business, ask if they would be willing to conduct a mechanic’s lien for you. They should know how the process works in their own state.
Titling vehicles with lost paperwork has become more difficult, as totaled cars from flooded areas, etc. are being shipped to different parts of the country, cleaned, and washed of their salvage titles. The state here is really cracking down on this fraudulent business, and therefore, makes it harder for the legit people.

Just a post to say I never made it back to Motor vehicles to correct my title.
Could it indeed be the motor number? If so - too late now, the 6 cylinder was pulled back in 1996!
By any chance - is the original motor number listed on the build sheet?
