I doubt this ac unit has any freon left in it however there is no guarantee of that till I open it up. Any advice on how to deal with this?

It should have oil in it.
There are 2 service points for the A/C but don’t know where from my head.
Soon I will be getting more A/C information
Mine is slightly different.
You can see one of the refill points towards the air cleaner.
It isn’t hooked up, there are lines missing so I don’t have a complete working setup (yet).
If your A/C is running on R12 you probably need to convert it to R134a.
You need to put different oil in the compressor itself and use other rings. After my vacation i am going to try this myself.

Thanks Matthew, I’m actually just removing the compressor to get to the Heads, getting the AC unit actually working will have to wait for another year. My main concern is spraying freon all over the place. I have a plan to put a blanket over the connection and take it slow, see if I get any hissing when I loosen the connection. I really doubt there will be anything in there.
I’m removing the Heads to change out the exhaust manifold gaskets and clean some rust out in the heads. The previous owner rebuilt the engine then let it sit for years. I’m sure I’ll be hitting you up soon in regards to that adventure.
I’m a little jealous of your Golden Commando 
Where the hoses attach to the compressor, you will see hex head caps on the fittings. There is a Schrader valve inside each, similar to a tire valve stem. Depress the center, and if it hisses, you still have some refrigerant pressure in the system.
