I just got home after a short trip to the US. The highlight of the trip was a visit to Chryslers@Carlisle 2010 and I have some pictures to share:
Before we started the roadtrip Carlisle we had to make sure that Faulkner was in good shape and that everything was in working order. Unfortunately the weather did not do much good for us with temperatures above 100F every day, and when you are going to the garage and have to look at the pool every time was no help either but we did enjoy the pool! Not good enough for a Olympic medal but we can practice more next year.
After Matthew finished the car while we were in the pool we could start with the first leg of the trip. We went to meet Earl Hess, he has two beautiful cars and can only drive one of them at a time. Last year we offered to drive one of the cars to Carlisle and that is what we did. Matthew loved the convertible and Earl said well if you have a drivers license go ahead and drive it. At that time Matthew was in the car already after lowering the top
We had a great time and before we knew it was time for dinner. we decided to go to Hoss’ Steak House. Earl went home before we went there but Curt and Jo-Ann and their lovely daughter Grace, Forwardlook Frank and his father, John Quinn, Matthew, Dan and I had a terrific time with good food and great company.
[Here’s an “orphan” video I found while cleaning up the Forum - uploaded to the site, but the post was prematurely ended before the video was attached to the post! Some of the clips are already present elsewhere here, but I preserve for completeness. -Dan]
The next morning I woke up and it was a lot cooler than the day before Unfortunately the cooler weather came also with rain and it kept raining until we arrived at the show, the minute we arrived it stopped raining
En route to the Fairgrounds, taking that turn in Mechanicsburg
We decided to see if there were any nice cars for sale and guess what, we found a 59 Sport Fury for sale. It was a decent car but the price was a bit high (I think he was asking $35,000).
Because Curt had to leave early we decided to have the group photo around noon, too bad that Jim Hamsher did not return to the show on Saturday so we had “only” 4 cars in the picture. There were more owners present at the show but they were not there when we made the picture and did not bring their car, we met Mark Coudriet, Forwardlook Frank, Dieter Bauer, Octie Ham, Davis Wilson, Jeff from Ohio, Jim Rawa and I am sure I am forgetting at least one other 59 owner. Maybe Dan will remember more names?
We checked out the parts for sale and then went to the Forwardlook tent to chat with the others. We had a great time and before we knew it was time for chicken dinner at the tent.
At dusk Dave Stragand started the drive-in movie and there were at least 60 people watching the movie. He has done a lot for the forwardlook cars in general and he really deserves the “coolest hang out place” award at Carlisle! Around midnight we were so tired that we decided to go back to the hotel and after saying “see you next year” to everybody it was time to go. We did not go back on Sunday because I wanted to be back for the soccer final between the Netherlands and Spain… no regrets but I was very disappointed.
Great job, Ron! Can’t wait for you to scale down and post some of those videos – I think the membership is going to blown away by three '59 SF’s tooling down the Turnpike. Most fun I’ve ever had driving Faulkner!
Ron, your photos are spectacular! The view backward over a tailfin, showing two following Plymouths, the shot at Earl Hess’ wooded drive, the convertible on the Carlisle lawn at dusk!
I am so glad the rain let up for the actual show (or so it would appear). I was here in WA State, watching the weather reports for the area. Great to see Curt was able to make it (and smiling as always!)
What report can you give on the swap meet offerings?
The photo credits are for Dan and Matthew too, I picked out the best pictures of all our pictures and resized them a little. And with cars like this everybody can make a great picture. When I get the video done you will be really seeing something, much more spectacular than the pictures.
Weather was great at the show, a little cooler would have been nice though. The swap meet was not much for us, I did not buy anything for my car and that goes for Dan and Matthew too. John bought some little bits and pieces for his convertible. I did get 3 old Australian magazines from Adriana for the help I had given her in finding and shipping tin cars and a Dutch brochure to her. The magazines are great and I will scan them soon to post the articles on the forum.
Curt had a rough time on Friday because of the heat but he had a great time on Saturday.
Is that a picture of John Quinn, seated on the motel sidewalk?
Is Jim Hamsher a “new” Listmember? (sorry, the name is not familiar to me at this moment)
Yes, that is me sitting against the wall of the Hotel. Probably pouting that Matthew would not share Earl’s Convert SF. I was only the co-pilot with Capt. Matthew. Still it was a great thrill to have 3 59’s blazing down the highway at 75 to 80 miles an hour. Dan at least let me drive his car and hair raising speeds as we darted in and out of traffic.
I did not know that these gems of ours can still be run at that speed still!
Lots of fun with Ron, Matthew and Dan that weekend. Meeting Curt and his bride, Earl Ness and Forward Look Frank was great too.
Seeing these movies makes me want to drive my car the 2800 miles to PA. to join you next year!
Nice job editing the movies, Ron, with the scene changes, etc.
Is there a way to enlarge the movies on my monitor?
(next time everybody needs to chat it up…need some Hello’s or cheering!)
Earl has a VERY long driveway!
The marine layer has drifted in from the ocean…it is 64 degrees in my house this morning, July 18, guess I should count my blessings?
Makes me want to go to Carlisle next year too.
Roger - You can act as Wagon Master. You start out in WA state and proceed East. Other '59’ers can join you as you proceed 'cross country. Something on the lines of the Hot Rod Power Tour. I mapquested your route and they got you coming through Southern Wis. I can join the tour around the Madison, WI area.
I think it would be permissible for a guy to use their modern cars if they feel their old iron wouldn’t make it.
sure, i could meet two Toms in Oregon, and John Fowlie and Tom Gerrard can meet up with us at Jeff’s in Laramie, then pick up john Q in Denver, then collect the rest of you along the way! Someone w/ car trailer can go up to Boston and collect Bernie and his car, then there’s Ed Eckerson, Barry in TN, and Craig in Peoria…(I am forgetting so many others)
If one or more were unable to drive their cars East, we’ll have John Fowlie’s airport limo all fixed up and ready to haul 16 more folks…
There was a guy years ago, put out a small publication called Penta Star, later Gold Star…he was a Californian and he had an airport limo needing resto. His dream was to fix it up and promote his magazine by driving that car. Sadly, he passed away, and the car fell off the radar.
You can right click on the movie and you can set the enlargement (zoom in) or try the link on YouTube and see it full screen. On the YouTube page there are also a couple of movies that I haven’t uploaded here yet that were taken during our visit to the Pomona Hot Rod Ranch. I made a note to myself for the cheering and hello’s next year but if you read the post under yours and follow the instructions you can take care of that yourself next year
[who knew that in 2010, Flash would go the way of the dinosaur… And .mp4 is now the de facto standard for video. Converting all .flv’s and .wmv’s to .mp4 as I go. iPhone .mov’s are OK - like .mp4, they comply with the H264 standard. -Dan]
Thanks Ron-those videos were true magic for anybody with 59 Plymouth blood in their veins. That view over the hood was incredibly familiar (see photo from mine), but unfortunately I’ve never been on the same highway as 2 other 59s. That’s about as rare as sighting a Bigfoot in the Arizona desert.
Those 3 finned monsters must have been a traffic hazard for drivers of the bland new stuff on the same roads-thanks for some great video work.
