I was thinking about 1 thread about the 59’s we find for sale on the internet so we can post them all in here.
I’ll start:
Plymouth Custom Suburban Wagon. Very nice original vintage station wagon! Stock 318ci V8, push-button automatic, power steering, fold down seat, wide whites, power rear window. Newer and very sharp base/clear paint, with extremely clean original interior and perfect headliner. Great driver and a Rare family cruiser!
Price - $ 13,950 OBO
Nice wagon! I take it that it is a 6 passenger style wagon. Matthew said that you can tell if the rear area has the external access panel to the spare tire that it is a 9 passenger, but could not remember if it was on the drives side or passenger side to look for it. We only see the drivers side in the pictures.
Matthew, which side should have the spare tire compartment on?
If i may speak for Matthew, if there, the access panel would be on the passenger side.
Although this wagon has an electric tailgate, this doesnt necessarily make it a 9 passenger.
And a spare tire access door doesnt necessarily make it a 9 passenger. As Matthew explained, one could be ordered for a 6-passenger car.
So, its unclear whether the wagon pictured is a 6 or a 9.
I noticed it has green Washington historical plates, like mine did.
John, I may be totallyutterly mistaken here. so I will turn the question over to Matthew:
Matthew, I took your post and ran with it, but allow me to ask this:
Was the access door/panel available on 6 passenger wagons? (I cannot find it listed in the Options booklet, and a Search of this site doesnt turn up anything)
There’s no arguing with empirical evidence! Thank you, John!
Looking thru the Options booklet, I see that a person could order a locking luggage compartment (LLC), the well area under the rear lid.
Having several wagons at your disposal, John, you are best qualified to solve this mystery.
I am assuming you have at least one 6-passenger and one 9-passenger version.
Do all of your wagons have that potential storage area for the tire in the passenger-side rear quarter?
Do all of your wagons have the inside removeable cover?
And for all to ponder: Would the ordering of a LLC require that the wagon have the external access door-panel?
(I don’t see why a person couldn’t climb into a 9-passenger wagon and remove the tire from its side storage).
If you haven’t browsed the Gallery lately, you should - Ron has been working his butt off to get his huge collection of ephemera on line, for all Plymouth enthusiasts to share. I can’t believe how much work he’s accomplished! Check it out: Home - 1959 Plymouth Gallery
we are very lucky to have Ron Keij on this List!
I havent taken time to see the Ross Roy book…I have no idea what a Ross Roy book is, so it looks like I am in for a treat!
Ross Roy was the advertising agency hired by Chrysler to promote their products, starting in the '30s, I think. They initially produced brochures, but then full-fledged data books used to educate salesmen, as well as used by salesmen to persuade the buyer. I have bits and pieces of the '59 Plymouth Ross Roy book, but I think Ron has the full set. Lots of great stuff in those pages!
Well, we have effectively hijacked this thread from Matthew..!
From the Ross Roy books I’ve learned (or re-learned):
-Two-tone paint was an option
-The manual transmission WAS available with 361
-Swivel seats were NOT available in Belvedere cvts
-The orange and brown interior scheme was available in Furys and Sport
Suburbans, which makes Dick’s Belvedere cvt data plate tag wrong??
Ross Roy Inc.was the main Chrysler advertising company that marketed the cars thru radio, TV and print ads. They held the Chyrsler contract for many years thru the early 70’s All the auto shows were put on by Ross Roy Inc. New product launchs etc. Forward Look promotion was orchestrated by Ross Roy on behalf of Chrysler.
They also were responsible for Dealer sales and technical Mechanical training. As evident by the films strips we see on the 59 Forum from Ron, is an example of their AV production work.
I interviewed for a job with them after college and also with a company called Campbell- Ewald who had the Chevrolet account for many years.
Sadly, I did not get hired on with them. My adult film career failed too! (short story… )
Thanks for letting me know, I just replaced the files with the rotated versions. There will be some more pages soon, maybe this afternoon and if I don’t feel like it today I will finish the Ross Roy book next weekend. And then there is a lot more for me to scan as I have lots more in the stash where this came from.
