ok, here is the unit that I removed from my car, I am replacing this one with a new more efficient (I hope) system.
The compressor unit was made by Borg Warner while the underdash evaporator unit has the markings “Mark IV Monitor”
The flat top bracket shown in the photo bolts on above the water pump and also uses one of the bolts for the thermostat housing, the compressor then sat right on the top at the front of the 318.
John, you are quite right, this unit may not necessarily be 1959 but maybe someone here can assist with the era after viewing the pics?
My car is coming along nicely, just fitting up the front guards and hood now, then back to the painters to finish them off. I started her up a few weeks ago for the first time and she ran like a dream, anyhow I wont hijack this post with my banter I will endeavor to post some updated pics on my page that Ron started for me…if I remember how too?
Very cool Dan.
Thanks fo sharing. I’m with John - I would refurb it if it were mine. If you decide not to I would be interested in buying it from you.
Take care
On ebay is several 1959 under-dash evaorator units. His ebay ID is: Imperialbubba, Johnny’s old car parts. I’m not sure how to post him on this thread.
Dick.
I’ve been down in southern Texas the last two weeks, and picked up a beat-up '59 Plymouth wagon with factory A/C that is complete. I’m toying with using the unit in my convertible in the future.
I emailed Jeff Carter to pick his brain on what was available in 1959. He says not only did Mopar have CoolAire and AirTemp, but Sears, Penneys even Montgomery Ward sold under-dash units. Jeff has a period-correct, re-built MobilAire under-dash unit for sale…says it will work with any modern compressor… (you guys want ALL components period-correct, I believe).
The compressor in my 2000 Dodge truck quit working last year. Parts and labor to replace would cost $2,000!
Wow,
I thought parts for the 59 were expensve but they are starting to look like a bargain compare to your Dodge compressor! Is Jeff going to post the unit he has for sale? I’d like to see it.
That’s a Model D air unit, sold by Mopar dealers in 1959-60. Noisy as all get out, but would chill you to the bone. It has a big(BIG) circulating fan at the back of the evaporator unit, and used a RV2 compressor just like the factory a/c setups. An exploded parts diagram is shown in the 1959 Mopar parts book…listed with the factory air units. I’m using a early 60’s unit by Mark IV when I do my 59 Fury resto this fall. I like the chrome face on this unit. (Pictured several quotes above)
SkyHawk 61 (Cessna 172?) Would the 58 and 59 model you confirmed that I had..Was this an underdash version attached to the lower dash frame or is it a floor mount unit? There was no brackets attached and no sign that there was any attached either.
John Q.
Parts book photo breakdown of evaporator shows what appears to be a stamped metal top bracket (PN# 1981834) that attached the top of the evaporator to the lower dash frame. It appears to be the width of the evaporator and about 2" deep (Estimates only) The breakdown also shows a horizontal “C” shaped lower bracket (PN#1981836) that attaches to the bottom of the evaporator unit, then mounts each “leg” of the “C” to the transmission tunnel; it also appears to run the entire width of the evaporator unit. The picture shows attaching screws on both brackets; it looks as if they bolt to the top and bottom somehow, instead of the sides like later under-dash units. Skyhawk61(Yes, I used to own a 172)
SkyHawk 61, Is the catalog that you referring to the main catalog parts book (I have that one) or is another one (dealer installed stuff) that I don’t have. I would love a scanned copy of that page if possible…
My parents had a 1967 Skyhawk 172 when I was growing up. I have my Multi engine and Instrument rating but hardly fly anymore…sigh…
If you have the Mopar “1959 Passenger Car Parts List” book, you should find the two exploded diagrams of the Model D air conditioner on page 24AG of the “Air Conditioning” section, toward the last part of the book. The picture at the top shows the two “supports” we’re talking about. Let me know if you can’t find it and I’ll try and send you a scanned copy PM. Dennis
shoot, I am missing some pages in that section and in others too! I will get a complete set soon so I am not stymied anymore. Thanks for pointing out where it could be located at.
I do have this exact air condition unit that you are looking for. This unit I have is in immaculet shape, it also has all the brackets & hoses
with it also. Please give me a call if you are interested 831-901-0151 thanks Mike.
