Well here it is another New Year and time for car resolutions. The last few years it was body work, disc brakes, headliner, engine detail, etc. This year I’m thinking upholstery. A previous owner of my car redid upholstery in all vinyl but retaining the Sport Fury theme. It’s in good shape but nothing matches the original in beauty. Would appreciate any info anybody has on obtaining the fabric and any other pointers. Thanks, John Z
SMS near Portland OR would be my suggestion for the correct fabric. I have used them several times, they have a very good reproduction product. The interior of both my SF and my Belvedere is from them. Find them at www.SMSautofabrics.com Tom
Ditto from me, John. They can frustrating to deal with, in terms of time to deliver, and for me the vinyl color “match” took two tries. If I may suggest, buy the reproduction fabric from SMS, buy the vinyl from OAI and have your trusted local upholstery shop put it all together for you. I wish I could tell you how many fabric and vinyl yards it took to do my SF..but I believe Tom Fox can answer that.

BTW John, did we ever do business regarding the upholstery buckles?
Having recently moved, I can no longer go to the spot I had my extra’s in order to answer my own questions..
Thanks, Tom & Roger for your replies. I will check with SMS. We have a local guy here that I could probably get the vinyl from and have him do the job. He’s a Ford guy though so I have to get my own research correct. For example, in photos I see the pattern on some of the door panels run vertical and others run horizontal. I think the vertical is correct or are they both correct? Roger - reference the buckles, I correspond frequently with one of my cars previous owners in Texas and he sent me the original rocker moldings and threw in several buckles so I have enough. I found him thru some papers in glove box (which never got cleaned out), lucky find. Roger - saw your WPC article in Showcase - you do good work! John Z

As for fabric orientation, whatever Tom Fox has done is correct. There is also Robert Hines for reference. Look for their cars in the Sport Fury portion of the Showcase section of the 59plymouth.net site
I believe both patterns are correct. Most of the advanced literature like dealer brocheures and magazine articles, shows a vertical pattern in both seats and panels. Every SF I have had or seen has the horizontal, and I have copied this in my restorations. All of these cars had the M294 vin, meaning a LA build. Maybe we could find a pattern of what plant did what. There might also be a pattern of early numbers vs later productions. The variations could be like others concerning these cars, like grilles having grooves or being smooth, or brake boosters being a Bendix can or Kelsey Hayes bellows. I have some of each. Tom
Tom, my friend Ed Ober reports the same thing – he’s encountered variations in the way the material patterns run as well. Besides the grille grooves, he mentioned that the LA gas pedals have dots on them (as mine does), but a different pattern exists for builds elsewhere.

well, the reason I ask is I have a varied collection of them. John Zastrow just acquired some from his West Coast Connection (whoever that might be). As far as I am concerned, these buckles are super-rare, yet I know they are out there, clinging to some rotting junkyard car, or worse, being thrown out by some customizer who has no use for them. I thought about getting Gary Goers interested in re-manufacturing them, as he does the “Letter” car scripts, etc. In fact, Gary told me to go ahead and send him one so that he could begin the replication process, but I never did.
I thought about putting these up on Ebay, but then I’d fel badly for the Listmembers who share comraderie and all that…
what happens with these “buckles and clasps” is not only do they oxidize, the tiny clips break off the back.I will try to post a picture to Dan, (sorry, dont know how to post the pics here).
installing them on your car would require some clever techniques..I suppose you could sew them right to the seats in, and glue them to the door panels…
