Plethora of questions for the '59 Suburban

Post by Kungfupanda »

Okay, I have several questions someone may can help with.
1.) My Custom Suburban has an underdash A/C unit that matches colors perfectly. Not sure if it was a factory option or not. It has three vents & has the name Vormad or something like that in stylized cursive. Any thoughts?

2.)Does anyone sale the board headliner? If so, who & how much?

3.)Anyone know of a good tailgate for sale? Or would it be cheaper to have it fixed?

4.)Does anyone carry the vinyl mat that covers the entire floor, or should I switch to carpet?

5.)Where can I find trim for the Custom Suburban, especially the anodized inserts?

6.)Who would win in a fight, a shark or alligator? ............................ okay that last one had nothing to do with Plymouths, I just always wanted to know. Lol.

Thanks in advance for your help.

1: Underdash A/C units were not offered as a factory option. Some of them were dealer installed but i guess most of them got installed later in the 70's and 80's

2: Try this link http://www.59plymouth.net/showcase/skinner/page2.html This might help you

3: Big M (John Fowlie) is a really good source for parts

4: No idea

5: Also try Big M

6: Guess we will have to try it

Kung Fu, What state do you live in? If you could update your profile on your locations that would be great.

Matthew is right twice, (very rare for him...) Get a hold of John Fowlie at Big M auto salvage in Northern California, He has tons of Forward Look cars and 59 Plymouths.

He responded to your tire question, so click on his avatar and you can send him a Personal Message (PM) and he will get back to you pretty quickly.

The guys and gals on this Forum are pretty knowledable and can help you on your needs and questions.

He's in North Carolina (must have updated his profile)
1)see matthew's response
2) nobody, you have to fix your existing one or buy a good 'survivor' one
3)what's wrong w/ the one you have? Typical rust thru along bottom? Spendy to have a tailgate shipped from California, might be better to fix yours
4)Depends on how you plan to use your car. I'm sure you could buy a roll of rubber sheeting and make your own, but I like carpeting :)
5)Yes, ask John Fowlie about trim pieces
6) I wouldnt fight either of them

Rofl, thanks Faulkner! Now that I know, I can sleep again at night.

As for the tailgate rogerh, that is definitely an option. I would rather have a good tailgate than have the whole bottom replaced. Of course the price is a factor. Btw, what kinda prices are you guys getting for the bottom 1/4 of the tailgate replaced?

my turn to smile..... :? .
As far as I know, there are no wagon owners on this List. There was one, in Europe, we havent heard from him in years.
Repair costs are relative to the area you live in, and of course the current economy has an effect. Nobody I know has ever had tailgate rust-out repaired.
Can you look locally for a sheetmetal man or shop? If you don't have that option, and even if you do, email John Fowlie and ask for availability and price on a rust-free tailgate, including shipping.
I remember trying to loosen the tailgate hinge bolts...I couldn't do it. But at the time I didn't have any rust-busting spray.
John Fowlie is by far the most affordable, but you can also try desert valley auto parts (dvap.com) , fremans auto, and Ron Keij's link on things '59, posted elsewhere on this site.

I have a good, solid, tailgate, as well as all the aluminum sportone inserts for a Custom Suburban, Except for the right rear quarter.

Tailgates are the same whether a manual or electric rear window was used.
