Lubricating Leaf Springs

Post by safety6 »

I'm new to the forum, having purchased a '59 SF HT in Jan. 2011. I'm doing some PM. Although I have no apparent problems, other than rust, I am hesitant to do anything (if it ain't broke - don't fix it philosophy) to the leaf springs. Anyone have strong feelings one way or the other on this topic? Thanks!

Going by your subject title, I'm guessing your leaf springs are noisy...
Originally there were asbestos pads between the leaves. If they have disintegrated, you might get some noise. More likely, the rubber mounting bushings are shot and thus metal-on-metal is causing squeaks. I wouldn't hesitate to spray some silicone into the bushings to silence them. Replacing the bushings isnt too difficult, if you have a space to work on them.
