Getting hit with spam registrations

Someone hacked the phpBB website -- phpBB is the bulletin board software our Forum is based on. They got all the usernames and passwords (fortunately, mine was unique for that site), and are spamming a lot of boards out there with spam registrations using an automated program. I get dozens a day -- it's hard to tell bona fide registrations from fake ones, unless I ask the person directly.
...so I'm about to upgrade, and apply a modification that will prompt a human to answer a question any human would know, before they can even request a registration (I had this once before, it was quite effective).
