Anyway, as far as the brakes, when you step on them, they lock up and stay locked, or they try and grab/lockup everytime you step on the brake ? They grab when I step on the brake, Nick, drag when I release and eventually free up. I used to have a problem with one of my front wheel locking up after...

Well, I pulled the rear drum on the passenger side -- no sign of a leak, but wow, there's a lot of brake dust. The shoes have a bit of glaze to them, and there's one spot that looks a little scuffed. I plan to lightly sand the shoes with emory paper, then clean the whole mess up with brake cleaner s...

Palacio's does a lot of work for shops all over the country; he gets a lot of work from L.A. and Las Vegas, he says. I highly recommend, if anyone's interested in a carb rebuild. Really friendly guy, fast turnaround, very reasonable prices Here's a link: http://www.yellowbot.com/palacio-carburetor-...

Them's the brakes

It turns out my joy ride after getting Faulkner running right, was not very joyful at all; the brakes -- rear, I think -- are locking up on me. At one point, they gave a terrifying squeal as if I had slammed on the brakes. We made it to the gas station (used a lot of gas tinkering, doncha know) and ...

Let me tell you about my carburetor rebuilder. He's the third generation that's been doing this (Palacio's -- Cuban? Dunno). He's holed away in a little storefront on North Broad Street in Philadelphia. Got two yappy dogs that guard the counter while he's in the bad yard tinkering (the back of the s...

Since Dan has Pertronix, I dont know if this applies to his car. Is the Pertronix attached to the original breaker plate, which in turn is moved by the vacuum advance? (I dont mean to get off-topic) Yes, it is -- the only thing Pertronix does is eliminate the points. Everything else is the same, in...

What about some help from a friend? Is anybody here who would go outside and pull the vacuum hose to check when it has high and low vacuum? It just takes two minutes and we would find finally the solution. I volunteer, Stefan! Now that I have a rebuilt carb and new gaskets. I'll give it a go... ......

its not wd40- it's carb cleaner. wd40 will not burn. (not that i've tried or anything  ) --j Actually, according to Ed Eckerson, it can be any spray -- even water. It's not combustion you're looking for, it's a temporary blockage of the leaking pathway that causes the engine to pick up rpms. ...

Your (and my) carburetor now delivers low vacuum at idle (no vacuum advance) and more suction at higher rpm’s. That way the vacuum advance pulls now the breaker plate a little back (counter clockwise) and allows the breaker to open even sooner. Means the vacuum advance supports the mechanical advan...

I'm not sure if it's original, Stefan, or rebuilt once before... How would I know? The carb has AD9 2812S stamped on it, and it's a Carter AFB. But I think Roger et. al. must be right. With the carb off, I can clearly see that the vacuum port at the base communicates directly with the intake manifol...

Good thing I did, too. I thought one of the four bordering the carb was tight enough, and I hand tightened the other three; but all four were still under 30 ft-lbs.

Re: It sucks that it won't suck

I could almost rationalize it, by observing that the vac tube from the carb is at a point in the carb body above the lower butterfly valves... OK, now that I have the carb off -- I can see that there's a tunnel from the tube fitting to a point below the lower valve plates. But, that ain't why I'm l...

It sucks that it won't suck

OK, I'm confused about the vacuum advance vacuum. Despite the other changes that I've made -- if I remove the hose from the vac chamber, I feel only the slightest vacuum at idle. When I give it some gas -- it gets stronger. That's the exact opposite of what the book says should happen; and indeed, I...

Before I read your last post, my inclination was you have vacuum leaks elsewhere, resulting in almost no vacuum at the vacuum hose. For sure, tighten the intake manifold bolts, and the carb-to-manifold nuts. See if you can tighten the carb assembly screws as well. My car is not here at the moment.....

Vacuum is highest at idle. Carb butterflies are nearly closed at idle, so vacuum at the hose is highest. You should hear and feel the vacuum ifyou pull off the vacuum hose at idle. It should also change the speed of your idling engine. When I pull the power steering hose off, I hear it. But not whe...
